The top golfers in the world will descend on the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England for the Open Championship, which runs from July 20-23 and has seen many great champions such as Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods in 2006, and Roberto De Vicenzo in 1967.

This will mark the 13th time that Royal Liverpool Golf Club will host the Open Championship. Cameron Smith will be looking to defend the Claret Jug he impressively won and grabbed from the hands of Rory McIlroy at St Andrews in 2022.

The 154-year-old course is known for its character and unique history. Each hole has its own name as the course is mostly levelled though some holes run through sandhills. The course recently underwent some renovations, with the 17th hole changing from a par 4 to a 136-yard par 3.

The Open Championship was last held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2014. Rory McIlroy won the Open Championship that year, shooting 17-under-par (271) to beat Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots, which was also McIlroy's last major tournament win.

With McIlroy’s sole victory at The Open coming at Hoylake, he, Scottie Scheffler, and Rickie Fowler will enter the week as the big three to beat in our opinion. The Northern Irishman has been on the brink of winning a major tournament multiple times since then, including at last year's Open Championship when he finished third, two strokes behind winner Cameron Smith. McIlroy also finished in second at the U.S. Open this year, losing to Wyndham Clark by one stroke.

Australia’s Cameron Smith shot a stunning final-round 64 to claim victory at St Andrew’s in 2022, denying McIlroy his second Claret Jug at the landmark 150th Open. Within days of Smith’s success, LIV Golf announced that the Open Champion had become their highest-ranked recruit in a deal believed to be worth more than $100 million.

Will Big Rick be a winner?

Rickie Fowler is being backed at 31.85 to win after he ended a four-year winless run with victory on the PGA Tour. Fowler, 34, recorded victory for the first time since winning the Phoenix Open in 2019 by coming through a three-man playoff to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Fowler, who fell to a career-low ranking of 185 during his drought, has finished inside the top 31 eight times in just 11 renewals of the Open Championship, including three top-six finishes. However, he is now back up to number 23 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and if on form must be up there to win.

Rory to roar and be the man to beat?

Rory McIlroy's win in 2014 was the third of his four major victories, and he’s at 9.29 to claim his fifth major of his career. However, it's now nine years since the Northern Irishman last won one of golf's four majors. Will his dramatic victory at the Scottish Open - earning him his 24th career PGA Tour win - last weekend be the start of a winning run that sees him break his major duck?

Scottie beaming in to lift the jug?

World number one Scottie Scheffler - who has been in superb form all season - is 9.08 with two of this season's major winners in, the Players Championship and the one and only Masters, he seems to be developing quite the momentum heading into The Open so must be a clear front runner to lift the claret jug in 2023.

Or an outside chance of big-hitting Bryson?

In 2022, Bryson DeChambeau was one of the biggest names in golf to defect from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf. But since the highly controversial move, worth roughly an astonishing $125 million, he is yet to register a win in the series.

After being plagued by his hip injury last year, DeChambeau has had several impressive outings in 2023. Tying 4th place at the PGA Championship in May, followed by a top-20 finish at the US Open. At LIV’s recent event in Valderrama, he came close to nabbing his first-ever LIV Golf win before being edged out by Talor Gooch.
