San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs (Sunday 23:30 UTC)

With the Championship games in the books, all eyes turn to Super Bowl LVIII and the City of Angeles, Las Vegas. The Allegiant Stadium, home to the Las Vegas Raiders, will host the 58th instalment of the NFL’s biggest game.

Patrick Mahomes will be the poster boy once again for the Kansas City Chiefs - but off the field, Taylor Swift will have the eyes of the pop world on her too - who knows - maybe, just maybe, this will be the most popular Super Bowl ever by TV views and household rating!

Naturally, the San Francisco 49ers will hoist up Broack Purdy, aka Mr Irrelevant, but he’s not quite the start-studded quarterback that his opposite number is, just yet anyway. Who knows what a Super Bowl win could do for the former Iowa State college quarterback.

The Handicap (Spread) for the game is -2 (1.917), a 3.5 point difference in the 49ers favour since these two teams last met in the Super Bowl in 2020 as the Chiefs ran out comfortable winners, 31-20. If you fancy a repeat result, Chiefs +2 (1.952) is the way to go on the spread.

The Chiefs are heading to their fourth Super Bowl in five years, and the 49ers are heading to their first in four years, when the Chiefs won their first with Mahomes at the helm. How the world has changed since then…

If you like to believe in the coloured jersey curse, since 2010 that team is 3-11 in the Super Bowl - look out Chiefs and Swifties! And if you believe it all comes down to the flip of a coin, the team that wins the coin toss are 1-9 in the last 10 Super Bowls. So one to watch as we approach kick off time!

With the superstition and curses out of the way... the Over/Under is set at 47 (O 1.826 / U 1.990), it represents the lowest line since 2016, but with both teams posing a serious threat to make big plays, the over could be worth a look! You only have to look at how the 49ers played against the Detroit Lions to see the potential for a big scoring game, if the 49ers want to win that is!

The two teams represent the best of their conferences over the last four years, consistently being in the mix and going on deep runs in the playoffs. Between them, they’ve made up 9 of the 10 spots in the AFC or NFC conference championship games since 2019, and incredible run of dominance over their opponents.

The Chiefs, led by Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have faced the 49ers twice in their time together, boasting two wins including that Super Bowl LIV victory. Averaging 68% completion on his passes and 368 yards passing in the two games (yes a small sample size) may show he could have a lot of success against a team that gave up 442 yards of offense last time out.

In the end, the game as the spread shows will likely come down to small margins. Who will avoid turnovers? Who will not give away penalties in key moments? Which stars will step up and make plays when required? All the answers to those questions for me is the Chiefs. They've been here, done it before.

Some way, somehow, they may well get their third Super Bowl in five years and cement their status as the latest sports dynasty. Then Travis Kelce will have his fairytale ending, to go off into the sunset in the desert in a getaway car with Swift by his side.
