MAVERICK GAMES

Our soccer expert shares betting tips and previews some of the key games in matchday 33 as Man City host relegation-threatened Luton Town and Arsenal face top-four hopefuls Aston Villa.

Newcastle vs Tottenham (Saturday 12:30 UTC)

St James Park hosts this North vs South battle which is prolific for both teams as they fight to secure either a coveted UCL, Europa League or Conference qualification spot for next season. Spurs are currently in 4th position with 60 points, while the Magpies falter in 8th position with 47. Both sides enjoyed victories the previous weekend with the Toon Army trumping Fulham 1-0 away and the Lilywhites comfortably brushing aside struggling Nottingham Forest 3-1.

Following his goal against Everton in his last game at St. James’ Park on the 2nd of April, Swedish international striker Alexander Isak became the first Newcastle player to score in five consecutive Premier League home games since Yoan Gouffran in December 2013. Another goal here would see him become the first Newcastle player to score 20+ goals across all competitions since Alan Shearer in 2002/03 and put him in good stead to challenge for the Golden Boot.

Importantly he found the back of the net twice when these two sides met at St. James’ Park last season, the match ended in a 6-1 obliteration of the travelling Londoners, though Spurs saved some face last December however, winning 4-1 on home turf. Total - Match Over 4.5 at 2.92.

Tottenham themselves have struggled on the road since Christmas, with a 4-0 blitz of Aston Villa being their only win during that time. Defeats to Brighton and Fulham have put the final nail in their coffin for any hope of contesting the title while gaining a single point against Man Utd, Everton and West Ham is of meagre consolation.

We can well expect goals to abound in this bout as there have been a mammoth 26 goals over their last five engagements. Tottenham will have to shore up their defences to avoid a repeat of last year, though worryingly they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 matches whilst also only failing to score once in that time. Correct Score 3:2 at 18.43.

This may prove to be a tough away fixture for the away team here, though it'll prove to be an exciting match either way with plenty of action in front of the goal box.

Manchester City vs Luton Town (Saturday 15:00 UTC)

Two sides will face off here at opposing ends of the table, with City 3rd from the top and Town 3rd from the bottom. The away side is in the midst of a gritty relegation battle, sitting in 18th place currently with 25 points, hustling with Forest and Everton to avoid relegation. While the Sky Blues find themselves scrambling for any edge over adversaries Arsenal and Liverpool for the title. Both teams enjoyed victory last weekend, with Manchester beating Crystal Palace 4-2 away and Luton triumphing over Bournemouth 2-1 in Kenilworth Road.

The last encounter between these two foes ended in a 6-2 decimation by City away at the Kenny, with leading man Erling Haaland scoring five goals in the FA Cup fixture. The Norwegian international striker was on the scoresheet last weekend away at Selhurst Park too after being assisted by de Bruyne in the 66th minute to put the game to bed. That goal now means he has 19 for his league tally, putting him top of the goal-scoring charts, with Villans forward Ollie Watkins nipping at his heels with 18. Correct Score 4:1 at 12.84.

The footballing world however was fixated on the Champions League and the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid for the showdown of two of the biggest clubs in the world and they were not disappointed. The first leg of the quarter-finals was a treat for fans and pundits alike as the two clubs clashed on Tuesday and after a seismic encounter, the game ended in a 3-3 draw. The defending champions are now in good stead to proceed onto the next round on home soil next Wednesday the 17th.

A 2-1 win over Luton in December began the Citizens' current 16-game unbeaten run in England's top division, with 12 of those games ending in victory. Indeed, Luton would do well to escape the Etihad with a point as a win would surely be a miracle given that City is unbeaten at home across 40 games in all competitions, amazingly this is just two short of an all-time club record of 42 established between December 1919 and November 1921. Luton Town Handicap - Match +3.5 at 1.418.

Luton travel to the Etihad as huge underdogs and will be hamstrung as several players are omitted through injury. Manager Rob Edwards will be troubled knowing that his club have only won just two of their 16 Premier League fixtures on the road this season. Therefore, the Hatters have a heady task ahead of them here against the reigning world champions and will have to dig especially deep if they hope to avoid a similar scoreline to their last encounter.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa (Sunday 16:30 UTC)

The Gunners welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday as the battle for the Premier League title rages. The London club currently sit atop the table ahead of rivals Liverpool on goal difference and above Manchester City by a single point with seven matches of the season remaining. The hosts enjoyed a 3-0 rout of visiting Brighton last weekend and concluded a 2-2 draw with German outfit Bayern München in the UCL midweek also. Villa currently lies in 5th position with 60 points going into the weekend, their latest match ending 3-3 with Brentford.

Since the winter interval, the Red & Whites have been nearly unassailable, having won 10 of their 11 league games and drawing the remainder. They scored 38 goals in that period, and have also kept more clean sheets while conceding the least of any other Premier League side in 2024. The aforementioned statistics contribute to a wholesome plus 51 goal difference in the league, which is their highest in the competition since the last day of the 2004-05 season. The bounty of goals could well be crucial at the end of the season in what is proving to be the closest title race in years. Arsenal Team Total - Match Over 2.5 at 2.07.

Former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side will be thirsty to secure a place in next season’s Champions League and they seek to garner any edge over table rivals Tottenham to that end. The Birmingham club are currently experiencing a streak of poor form that has meant they have only won one of their last five Premier League matches with defeats to Tottenham and Man City as well as draws against the aforementioned Brentford and West Ham.

However, it would be foolish to omit them from a victory in this match as they have already beaten Arsenal once this season. Critical to the side's efforts this season has been England international Ollie Watkins who has 24 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. Aston Villa to Score? Yes at 1.729.

A tough gig awaits the Villans in North London, and the result could have far-reaching implications in the title race. However, with the Gunners on the best form in years and proving extremely dangerous in the opposition goal box favour should go to the home side with plenty of goals anticipated.
