Premier League Preview: Merseyside and London derbies headline big weekend of games

MAVERICK GAMES

Matchday nine in the Premier League sees the return of elite-level club football following the international break. Our soccer expert shares betting tips and previews some huge games.

Liverpool vs Everton (Saturday 11:30 UTC)

Liverpool are hoping they’re coming back to better form after a defeat and a draw in their last two games left them three points off the top spot in the league table. Everton have certainly been the weaker side, but finally getting their first two wins of the season before the break, Dyche and his men are hoping their fortunes have turned around.

It’s quite a tumultuous time at Goodison Park at the moment with a potential new owner going through the relevant checks it seems the results on the pitch need to improve - and for that to happen they will need to go shopping the next transfer window.

Mo Salah has been in scorching form for The Reds with four assists and five goals this season already with no Everton player getting anywhere near that tally and the team as a whole only scoring nine goals this season so far.  I really can't see it going any other way than a Liverpool win only question is by how much.

Liverpool are at 1.348 to win with Everton out at 8.19. To match their previous league result of 2-0 we have a correct score market priced at 8.77 but if you are feeling VERY lucky then the same score to Everton at 2-0 is way out at 47.71.

Chelsea vs Arsenal (Saturday 16:30 UTC)

Big-spending Chelsea have finally started firing but are still way behind where they should be in the table based on the new players they got this summer. They’re currently 11th whilst their neighbours at the Emirates 10 miles away are flying high with not a single loss this season and sit in second place only on goal difference. Mauricio Pochettino still has a significant injury list which he is hoping will start to get smaller soon to help bolster their defence and attack - as well as justifying the huge spend.

Bukayo Saka may still be carrying his thigh injury so may not be in contention for this match but with players returning and the impact Declan Rice has had sure Saka won't be missed too much. The Aaron Ramsdale David Raya conversation still rumbles on… one wonders who will win this battle. Arsenal fans will only care about wins, but the dressing room mood can play a part in that objective.

Michail Antonio thinks the media have cast a negative spotlight on the competition between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya and that "they are trying to make a rift between the players".

Both goalkeepers have made four Premier League appearances so far this season, and the West Ham forward said the situation can become more difficult when the media zones in on it. He told the Footballer's Football Podcast: "It doesn’t help. Basically, they are trying to make a rift between the players.

"This one has been so big because of how well Arsenal did last year and Ramsdale was their number one. The fact they brought in Raya this year and just threw him in for Premier League games, the media has kind of made it more than it actually is. The manager makes the decision and he has chosen to put Raya in. It’s just what it is."

The Gunners are surprisingly only just favourites in the odds with them being priced at 2.31 whilst Chelsea are 3.23. One to watch is the same score as the last time these two teams met in the league with Arsenal coming out 3-1 winners back in May this year at a nice price of 17.69.

Sheffield Utd vs Manchester Utd (Saturday 20:00 UTC)

Winless Sheffield Utd host Man Utd at Bramhall Lane with Erik ten Haag’s men seemingly in chaos at the moment, this could be The Blades chance to take advantage. However, a stat that they won't like is they’re in the worst performing promoted trio of teams along with Luton and Burnley only securing a combined points tally of nine after eight Premier League games, but Sheffield Utd are now hunkered to the bottom of the table with only one draw giving them their sole point. Games after this weekend don’t get much easier with a trip to in-form Arsenal they need all the hope they can get.

The Old Trafford takeover has taken up most of the back pages over the last few days with Jim Ratcliffe now being reported as the only interested party to take a minority stake in the club with Glazer’s still having a controlling stake. This has caused unrest with the Stretford End faithful and beyond who have made their feelings completely obvious which has taken eye off the performances on the pitch.

Scott McTominay has really stepped out of the shadows recently despite being touted to leave the club in the summer transfer window with some great showings and two goals last weekend. Marcus Rashford hasn’t been firing on all cylinders for some time now, and let's not even go there with Onana and the so-called promise of Rasmus Hojlund. Both prospects over-promising and under-delivering thus far.

Manchester United are clear favourites at 1.429 and Sheffield United are at 7.32 with the draw being 5.10. Or will Steel City be sharpening their knives and put their goal-scoring heads on and win 2-0 at home being priced at 42.70… you just never know.
