Premier League Preview: Man City host Liverpool in title battle, Arsenal and Man Utd on the road

MAVERICK GAMES

Our soccer expert shares betting tips and previews some huge games in matchday 13 in the Premier League, including Manchester City welcoming title rivals Liverpool to the Etihad for a blockbuster clash.

Manchester City vs Liverpool (Saturday 12:30 UTC)

What a blockbuster game on a Saturday returning from the international break. Top of the table titans come together with a single point separating them. Pep Guardiola will be hoping for a different game and scoreline than the Chelsea game.

They were unlucky to have drawn after conceding a last-minute penalty but in this game, all eyes will be on what seemingly is looked upon as the most dynamic midfield and forwards in the league.

Luis Diaz if fresh off scoring two goals for Colombia against Brazil so he’s going to be quite confident. Mo Salah scored four goals last week for Egypt. Darwin Nunez is still doing things as well. They surely are feeling very confident. Not forgetting Diogo Jota, but at least if you put him on the bench you can bring him on in the game. He’s always liable to score and does do well against Manchester City and has scored against them in the past.

Ex-Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown has backed his former side to win the Premier League regardless of the result of Saturday's meeting with Liverpool. The match is being billed as a huge test for the Reds' potential title aspirations, with the two teams separated by just a point after 12 games.

"You look at City's return from the past few seasons - it's really good, it's better than it has been,"

"They love a chase. They can go after teams and everyone knows they're coming - they're on the run. But you'd rather be ahead any day of the week, where you can almost guarantee yourself another Premier League title.

"I would still back City if they lost the game - no question. They're going to be right in the mix and surely City will win the league again”

Delved into the head-to-head stats bank for this game given its size:

  • Liverpool have won just one of their past 14 Premier League away games against Manchester City (D5 L8) - and that was a 4-1 victory in Jurgen Klopp's first visit to Etihad Stadium in November 2015.
  • Erling Haaland has scored 49 goals in 47 Premier League matches for City. A goal on Saturday would mean smashing the record for fastest to 50 (held by Andrew Cole - 65 games). However, Liverpool are one of two teams he has faced and not yet scored against in the competition (along with Brentford).
  • The Reds have lost only one of their past 23 league games (W15 D7) - although they are winless in their past three and on a run of seven matches on the road without a clean sheet.
  • Pep Guardiola's City have won their past 23 home games and victory on Saturday would equal that record for an English top-flight club, currently held by Sunderland between December 1890 and April 1892.
  • Guardiola and Klopp have faced each other more than they’ve faced any other manager (28). Klopp’s 11 wins is the most by any manager against Guardiola, while Guardiola’s 10 victories is the most by any manager against Klopp.

I think this will be a very close game with City being favourites at 1.724 and Liverpool at 4.23 I think a really good price is for a draw at 4.41 given the team's power it may cancel each other out.

Brentford vs Arsenal (Saturday 17:30 UTC)

This will be Mikel Arteta’s 200th match in charge of Arsenal with him winning more matches than any other of the nine managers that have reached this milestone so this will surely be firing up the away fans. This game is very well poised despite, on paper, Brentford should be disposed of fairly easily.

After beating Arsenal 2-0 in their first Premier League game in August 2021, Brentford are winless in their past three against the Gunners and Arsenal have already won at Brentford this season, beating them 1-0 in the Carabao Cup third round. The last time they won two away games against a fellow London side in the same season was at Crystal Palace in 1992-93.

On the flip side, The Bees have lost just one of their past 10 home league games (W5 D4), going down 3-1 to Everton in September. There can be few complaints from Brentford fans about the season so far, given the circumstances with which they have had to deal with.

Without key men Ivan Toney, David Raya, Rico Henry and Ben Mee, for various reasons, for all - or most - of the campaign, it is a huge achievement to be sitting comfortably halfway up the table.

Add into that injuries to several more first-team squad regulars and it is clear Thomas Frank continues to do a remarkable job. There has only been one bad performance in 12 games, and with the injury list finally starting to ease, and Toney due back in January, continued improvement could be on the cards, if he stays that is.

Despite both the team's form I really think Arsenal will be too good for Thomas Frank's men but they are priced at 4.72 and a draw only at 3.74 may be worth a shot but for me, it’s The Gunners at 1.769 that will come out on top.

Everton vs Manchester United (Sunday 16:30 UTC)

What can I say about this fixture? Headlines on both sides are more about the off-field chaos than the form on-field. Manchester United and its seemingly stalling minority investment in the club and then Everton’s financial despair, as well as the Premier League handing out a 10-point deduction as punishment, won't help Sean Dyche’s cause. Then there's the takeover as well…Phew!

It’s going to be them against the world and I think that’s going to be a tough place for Erik ten Hag’s men to go - particularly Goodison Park at its best. It’s going to be a phenomenal game.

The Red Devils have been picking up three points here, there and everywhere and only one loss in the last five games in the league, the team clearly have enough to beat an Everton side who sit 19th going into the weekend.

If the away team can wear them out a little bit, get their back up - and some key players, like Bruno Fernandes and even Marcus Rashford, can start for United with a little bit of fire in their belly, Everton will struggle.

However,  Everton away is always a tricky fixture, but they are going to be right up for it, given the circumstances. My only worry is we’ve seen too many times this season when people have accused the other team of wanting it more. Everton are going to want this and want this bad to prove a point

Dyche is the prime man to be firing up, not only his starting XI, but his whole squad and fans. This is going to be a battle. They will take hope from the fact that Utd just haven’t been big scoring at all this season and that’s despite the hype around Rasmus Hojlund after his arrival.

He’s certainly not turned out to be the Haaland V2 that was talked up, nowhere near. United's 13 goals so far in the top flight this season (16 against) is the fewest of any side in the top 12 (Everton at 14 goals scored and 14 against), with Marcus Rashford (one goal from 3.9 xG) and Rasmus Hojlund (no goals from 2.5 xG) the two players underperforming the most against their expected goals totals.

Spicy affair this will be for sure and that fight has been reflected in the odds, which are close considering the gulf in league position. Ten Hag’s men are at 2.55 and The Toffees are at 2.74 with the draw being at 3.36 and a short price for both teams to score is a fairly easy one at 1.641.
