Premier League Preview: Chelsea host Man City in headline fixture of the weekend

MAVERICK GAMES

Our soccer expert shares betting tips and previews some huge games in matchday 12 in the Premier League, including Chelsea against Manchester City in London.

Bournemouth vs Newcastle (Saturday 17:30 UTC)

The Cherries got a battering at the hands of an awesome Manchester City last weekend with a 6-1 thrashing at the Etihad. They will be determined that it will not be the yardstick upon which Bournemouth will be measured this season. But there does come a point when fans will question whether a different style might be more profitable, while we're in the infancy of adopting Andoni Iraola's different brand of football.

A lot has changed very quickly and, although it is clear that Bournemouth have a distinct plan for the future, at the moment the league table suggests the style adjustment, twinned with changes within the squad, has resulted in a campaign disappointing to some and a slow burner to others.

Eddie Howe returning to the Vitality stadium will always be special for him but I really don’t think that when his Newcastle side will take to the pitch that will matter much. Howe has issues with his squad for sure, or should it be lack of a squad, as he battles an ever-growing injury list where he turns to the academy for players to fill the void. Also, the impact of the Borussia Dortmund loss in the Champions League may still be felt. Then another thing is firepower… something the Toon just haven’t got in full force at the moment.

Bournemouth really need a result in this game with only one win this season, and are almost rooted to that bottom three in the table already. It's not only goals scored that are an issue with only nine to their name - they’ve conceded 27, equalled by Burnley and only bettered by Sheffield Utd on 30!

Despite the lack of firepower and a poor defence from The Cherries I can't see this going any other way with a Newcastle win in this game priced at 1.714 and Bournemouth at 4.60 with my pick of a 2-0 win for Howe’s men being at 9.58 a great option for a correct score.

Liverpool vs Brentford (Sunday 14:00 UTC)

For a side averaging nearly two goals a game in the Premier League, Liverpool left it remarkably late at Luton Town on Sunday to find the back of the net and continue their feat of scoring in every match this season.

However, it is the fact they had 24 attempts at goal but only six on target which will surely have concerned Jurgen Klopp. Just days after being praised by his manager following his worldie at Bournemouth, Darwin Nunez made hard work of a number of chances – most notably embarrassingly blazing over a totally open goal from six yards.

A negative from the game was Alexis Mac Allister's booking - a fifth of the campaign which means the midfielder will miss this game. He becomes the fourth Reds player to serve a suspension this season - something previously uncharacteristic for Liverpool.

Brentford continue to punch above their weight and seem to be coping without Ivan Toney with Neil Maupay coming good with his first goal since September 2022 eased the pressure off him. With Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo really stepping up this season they have taken some of this slack as well.

Thomas Frank’s team are another squad that are suffering with injuries with no less than eight first-team players out yet they still keep battering out results and remaining firmly in the top half of the table. Brentford showed fantastic spirit and resilience at West Ham. Maupay, Collins and Jensen were fantastic. Strakosha coming on for Flekken showed great composure. A wonderful all-round performance.

Odds aren’t in favour of what I’m thinking with this game Liverpool are clear favourites at 1.404 and The Bees are at a big price of 7.08 but I think the best option is a draw at 5.22 I can't really see a Brentford win, but as I said they’re punching way above where they should be on paper.

Chelsea vs Manchester City (Sunday 16:30 UTC)

Well, Chelsea’s game against Spurs… what a game. Chaotic but not controversial - all the referee and VAR calls were correct. Spurs controversially lost the plot, their heads, their discipline and two players to red cards. Chelsea took full advantage - eventually. Credit to the remaining nine Tottenham players for giving it a go, but full credit to Chelsea for keeping calm and getting the job done and done fairly well.

This performance by Chelsea was real cause for hope, especially Nicolas Jackson’s. They played good, positive football right from the start and were not put off by an early goal and really dug in. Mauricio Pochettino will be a happier manager after that result, more the scoreline than the performance though, I would say. This will be a massive test though.

Pep Guardiola’s team destroyed Bournemouth with free-flowing, graceful and attacking football and each player won their individual battle. Then getting through to the knockout stages of the Champions League will buoy City heading into this game.

Erling Haaland was unusually not on the scoresheet in the last league game but it’s quite nice to see others getting in on the act of finding the net. Phil Foden is having an outstanding season so far similarly with Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez……I could go on with this team of pure superstars.

I really think Chelsea will give them a run in this game and press them hard but I really can't see the Citizens tripping up in this one. Guardiola’s side are priced at 1.763 for the win and Mauricio’s men are at 4.71 but these league games between the two sides have never really been high scoring so for a correct score at 1-0 to City is 8.27 and a 2-0 is only 9.18 so maybe worth a punt.
