MAVERICK GAMES

Our soccer expert shares betting tips and previews some of the key games across the mainland European continent as the title races heat up in Spain and Germany with only less than 10 games to go in each.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday 17:30 UTC)

The Allianz Arena, Munich will be buzzing for the football carnival known throughout the world as Der Klassiker this weekend, and there is plenty at stake for both clubs even though the title is now realistically out of reach. After the international break, it's back to business in the Bundesliga and the hosts go into the 110th meeting between the sides in great form, having won their last three games in all competitions while scoring a remarkable 16 goals in the process.

Bayern's hat-trick hero Harry Kane accounted for six of these goals, but even so, the division's top scorer faces a tough test still, as time will tell if he can manage to become the top scorer of a single season. He is doubtful to appear this weekend due to an ankle injury which also meant he could not play for England versus Brazil or Belgium. Unfortunately for fans, captain and German international Manuel Neuer is also a major doubt to participate, being injured also. Though Leroy Sané will be expected to return after a break much to the delight of football fans. Stern des Südens are unbeaten in their last 10 Klassikers and have emerged victorious in nine consecutive games at home against BVB and it will take a strong effort to undo this dismal statistic. Correct Score 2-0 at 12.65.

However, Dortmund manager Edin Terzić can boast of his side's good run of form as the club have four wins on the trot in all competitions for the first time in a year. Like their rivals, this weekend, die Schwarzgelben are riding high in the UEFA Champions League too but still need to fight for a place in European football's top competition for the 2024/25 season as they hustle with RB Leipzig for the 4th position and qualification.

The side's last run out in the league was a 3-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt with goals from Karim Adeyami, Mats Hummels and Emre Can completing a resounding comeback. Fans will be happy goalkeeper Gregor Kobel will return from injury for the match, along with Julian Ryerson. German international and Bundesliga's third-placed assist provider Julian Brandt will be playing and his participation along with Jadon Sancho's will be key to breaking Bayern's defences. Total - 1st Half Over 1.5 at 1.757.

A tough away fixture beckons for Dortmund here and they'll be travelling to the venue knowing that they haven’t beaten any team in the top five this season. Though Bayern have lost a total of 32 matches against Dortmund in all competitions, the most defeats against any other team in German football, so there is hope yet.

Marseille vs PSG (Sunday 19:45 UTC)

PSG will be travelling to the Stade Vélodrome in cruise control as they are set to win another Ligue 1 title. Les Parisians have a 12-point lead at the top of the table leaving their nearest rivals Brest and Monaco in the lurch. Therefore, Le Classique could mean a lot more to Marseille on this occasion as they struggle to break into the top six and achieve European qualification. They currently lie in 7th position, a whole 20 points behind their Northern rivals.

With 12 matches left to play, Les Phoceens need a positive result against PSG to keep the pressure on 4th-placed Lille, there is a fierce battle brewing between who will qualify for European next year, with Lens, Nice, Rennes and Reims fairly even point wise. The Southern French side has had a rollercoaster ride this season; however, they seem to have found a measure of stability under new head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

With the side recently progressing into the quarterfinals of the Europa League after a tough match with Villarreal that finished 5-3 on aggregate, they'll now be facing Portuguese outfit Benfica on the 11th of April, away for the first leg. Gabon international striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on great form this season, scoring 23 goals across all competitions. Marseille to Score? 1st Half - Yes at 2.11.

Les Rouge-et-Bleu travels south for this classic in superb form, having been unbeaten in the last 24 matches overall and haven’t lost in Ligue 1 since September. Before the international break, fans enjoyed a spectacle as the side ran riot against Montpellier. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat trick and Vitinha added a goal and two assists to end the affray 6-2. It was Mbappe’s ninth career Ligue 1 hat trick and for this season he leads the division's goal tally with 24 goals and 38 total across all competitions.

With the title seemingly won, the club's attention now swings towards the Champions League and the quarter-final clash with Barcelona. However, given the huge rivalry with Marseille, we can expect manager Luis Enrique to line up all the stars in this starting XI. Correct Score 1-3 at 14.80.

Marseille has an amazing home record this season, being unbeaten across all competitions, however, looking to extend that run will be a challenge ask against front-runners PSG.

Real Madrid vs Athletic Club (Sunday 20:00 UTC)

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will host this top-four battle of El Viejo Clásico, as the league leaders host 4th placed Bilbao. The visitors will be seeking to cement their current position and rejoin the Champions League where they have been absent for ten years. Los Blancos are currently on an unbeaten streak in the league and have a hearty eight-point lead over 2nd place Barcelona.

The hosts will enter this game on the back of a great run of form, being unbeaten in their last 12 games across competitions, recording eight wins and four draws. Especially rampant the side have scored a remarkable 26 goals and conceded just 10 as their grip on the title becomes ever stronger. Their last match resulted in a comfortable 4-2 win against Osasuna at home, with Vinicius Junior grabbing a brace, alongside goals from Dani Carvajal and Brahim Díaz Real.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti will have some selection questions ahead of him as Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba, and Eder Militao are all currently injured. Fans will lament the omission of Jude Bellingham who is serving the second of his two-match ban, after being made ineligible for his selection following a late red card against Valencia. The English international starlet still leads La Liga's top-scoring charts for the season with 16 goals. Winning Margin - Real Madrid by 2 at 4.98.

The away side will also enter this game in pretty good form themselves. With just one defeat in their last 11 games across all competitions, recording seven wins and three draws - Los Leones are looking like they could give Madrid a run for their money. They've scored 20 goals over that duration and have conceded just seven, as their defensive lines have held well thanks to the likes of Dani Vivian and Aitor Paredes.

The Basque side triumphed comfortably 2-0 over Alaves at home, with the three points edging them ahead of 5th placed Atlético de Madrid in the table. Spanish international left winger Nico Williams has been clinical for the team's efforts this season contributing nine assists in the league alone. The outfit will be looking for a win to go into the Copa del Rey final against Mallorca on the 6th of April on a high. Athletic Club Bilbao to Score? Yes at 1.625.

Real have the better head-to-head record over the decades, though if current form is any indicator, Athletic Club have also been superb in recent times and will make the hosts work for any points. Though it will be a tough ask for a win being that Madrid hasn’t lost at home since April 2023.
