EURO 2024 Qualifiers Preview: England host Italy, Scotland look to secure qualification

MAVERICK GAMES

Euro 2024 qualifying continues with several sides looking to secure progression for the tournament next summer. Our expert takes a look at several key games, sharing his betting tips.

Spain vs Scotland (Thursday 12th October 18:45 UTC)

The Scottish have been rampant during the 2024 EURO qualifiers, managing an immaculate record of five wins in five matches, with the accolade all the more brazen as the group isn't a cakewalk with Spain and Norway in it. They stand as leaders with a huge six-point advantage over second-placed Spain, although the Iberians do have a game in hand. Qualification for Europe's flagship international event in Germany next year is surely assured.

This perfect record will be put to the test on Thursday evening when they travel to Estadio Olimpico de Sevilla to take on La Roja. A side which have won all their remaining games, with the 0-2 loss in Scotland their lone slip-up in the qualifying campaign. The Spanish seem to have shrugged off this solitary loss and their confidence was boosted by winning their first UEFA Nations League title after a victory over Croatia on penalties in the final. Spain To Score? 1st Half - Yes at 1.42.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was in action for his club last weekend, scoring two late goals to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat, he’ll be instrumental in helping Scotland find the net here too, as he is currently joint second for total goals with six in these qualifiers. While currently suspended in the Premier League after receiving a red card playing against Nottingham Forest, we can well expect Rodri to be pivotal in his nation's efforts here as ever.

Out for revenge after being humbled away in Scotland, we can expect no mercy from this Spanish side, as they have the quality in the team and the home advantage for an expected win. However, we'll see if lightning can indeed strike twice as Scotland seeks to continue their immaculate record and gain three points to assure qualification ahead of their Iberian rivals.

Netherlands vs France (Friday 18:45 UTC)

Two former European champions will clash in Amsterdam with the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying process in its closing chapters. Les Bleus lead the way in Group B and have dominated thus far with five wins out of five, scoring eleven goals in the process and all the while remarkably not conceding a single goal.

Oranje meanwhile suffered their only loss to date while playing away in Paris, when France ran out unequivocal 4-0 winners at Stade de France earlier this year. Ronald Koeman’s side is six points behind the group leaders, though with a game in hand and a chance to seize three points from the French, catching up is feasible. Greece currently matches the Dutch for points although, without a game in hand, they are at a disadvantage.

The Netherlands have both scored and conceded during the same ninety-one minutes in sixteen of their last twenty Euro 2024 qualifying fixtures, so the high-flying outfit has proven pretty entertaining to watch, however, they'll have to rally in defence to counter the vigorous French attack lead by this season's current Ligue 1 top scorer Kylian Mbappe. It should be noted with caution that France opened the scoring in their last six European Championship qualification matches, while each of the Netherlands’ last four home games has seen over 2.5 goals. French Team Total - 1st Half Over 0.5 at 2.03.

With the likes of Frenkie De Jong, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay all out with injuries for the home nation, an interesting fixture awaits us here. With a mixed record for the Dutch and questions over their defence, they'll have to work hard to shut this intimidating French side out and quell their immaculate record.

England vs Italy (Tuesday 18:45 UTC)

The battle between these UEFA Euro 2020 finalists will commence once more at Wembley. Making a prediction for the match is not an easy task, since both teams are evenly matched in most areas of the pitch. In the last five encounters, the teams are on equal par for results with three draws and a win apiece.

Italy has a better record in this competition, having won it twice in 1968 and 2020, compared to England never having been successful. Indeed, this fixture comes just over two years after these two met in the final of the 2020 competition (played in 2021), at which it was the Italians who claimed victory, courtesy of a penalty shoot-out after a rough and tumble ninety minutes then extra time.

Gareth Southgate's team are well set to qualify after claiming an impressive four wins out of five, in their Group C games thus far. The most pivotal of these results was the 2-1 success over Italy in Naples last March, curtailing the host's ambitions in the process. Anglo efforts to qualify were helped along a then they swept aside North Macedonia 7-0, the goal difference would be well appreciated by their campaign. The last match ended 1-1 against Ukraine, with the solitary goal coming from Kyle Walker.

Declan Rice and Harry Kane were both on the scoresheet last time against Italia, and the latter striker can be well expected to lead the charge in finding the net once more. The England captain has been on fantastic form in the Bundesliga after making the move to Bayern Munich over the summer, with eight goals in seven games, along with contributing to four more. Putting one past Italy last Spring meant he also became England’s all-time record goalscorer. Italian Handicap - Match +0.5 2.20.

Taking into account England's intrepid form and host of leading men, it is looking like the Italians are in a straight fight with the Ukrainians for the second qualifying spot, when the pair last met it ended in favour of the Italians 2-1, with a brace for Davide Frattesi. The Internazionale midfielder has had a meeker run of it this season in domestic affairs with only one goal to his name, though there is no doubt he will be a key player in his nation's efforts in helping the likes of Mateo Retegui and Federico Chiesa to find the net. The final match of the group in November will see Italy play the Ukrainians in what might well be a winner-takes contest to qualify, although North Macedonia cannot be discounted completely either as all three nations currently have seven points apiece, however, Italy have the game in hand.

England will be sitting back to watch their future opponents play against Malta first, closely scrutinising for weaknesses. With home advantage and with the Three Lions leading men all on intrepid form, Azzurri has an arduous task ahead of them here although it'll be a close run thing whatever the result once the final whistle blows.
