Bayern Munich vs Lazio (Tuesday 20:00 UTC) [0:1]

Die Roten welcomes I Biancocelesti to the Allianz Arena, Munich after a close-fought initial encounter in Rome where the Italians prevailed by the single and only goal a month prior. Lazio is on the verge of reaching the quarterfinals of the continent's penultimate club competition for the first time in almost two decades, while the Bundesliga champions are ever seeking to procure their seventh European crown. Out of the weekend, the hosts emerged 2-2 away at Freiburg, while tempers flared in Rome following a 1-0 loss to AC Milan.

Progressing out of Group A was a stroll in the park for the Bavarians and emerged top of the pile by eight points. It could be well expected that they would advance through this round too with relative ease, however, they suffered a serious setback at the Stadio Olimpico in the first leg and now must double down for any hope of advancement. The away team could've resigned themselves with a draw away in the Italian capital, though all was undone when Dayot Upamecano was sent off conceding a penalty in the process, which Lazio captain Ciro Immobile was more than happy to convert from the spot.

It's been a confounding season in domestic affairs for the German giants, as they’ve lost to RB Leipzig in the Super Cup, and crashed out of the second round of the DFB-Pokal to 3. Liga outfit Saarbrücken. Indeed, the Bundesliga itself slips a little further away from them to rivals Bayer Leverkusen every week. This has culminated in the announcement that Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will be departing Bavaria in the summer, as his inaugural season stumbles towards a possibly tragic conclusion, with the club's only opportunity at redemption now to be found in the UCL. In contrast to the aforementioned grumbles, English arrival Harry Kane has enjoyed a sumptuous start with his new club and currently leads the goal-scoring tally of Germany's top division with 27 goals. Correct Score 2:0 at 6.54.

All is not lost as the records show they have previously progressed from all but one of their last dozen ties at this stage of the competition, they are also unbeaten in 13 home matches in the competition, of which optimistically they have won 10. However, the omens could also prove ill, as Bayern have been eliminated from each of their last seven Champions League ties when losing the first leg. Naysayers aside the outfit still has a lot going for it if the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and the aforementioned English international goal machine can commence proceedings firing on all cylinders. Bayern Munich Winning Margin by 2 at 4.01.

Lazio is now a minimum of 90 minutes away from a spot in the quarterfinals and has done well following a tumultuous journey through Group E. Maurizio Sarri's men secured the Rome outfit's third appearance in the knockout stages and will be glad for the jumpstart as they kick off in Deutschland. Revenge will also be on the cards, as in 2021, Bayern won both legs of their last-16 encounter in the competition, and Biancocelesti fans can dare to dream of being in the next round draw on the 15th of March. The portents look good as the Romans have progressed from 12 of their last 13 knockout ties after a victory in the first leg. However, there is cause for concern in that they have lost half of their Serie A away fixtures this season, which has led to them wallowing mid-table and dangerously out of contention for anything this season. Lazio Handicap - Match +1.5 at 2.07.

The club's recent reminder that they are not in cruise control was against Rossoneri last weekend, where a closely fought match started to fray at the seams when Luca Pellegrini was sent off in the 57th minute and the ten-man squad conceded later in the 88th compliments of Noah Okafor. This prompted an implosion of sorts, with the hosts trudging off the field with only eight men as Adam Marušić and Matteo Guendouzi joined their earlier omitted comrade in the changing rooms early after seeing red too. München will be only too happy to exploit this lack of discipline and the travelling team will have to lock arms to hold onto their tenuous lead.

With both clubs struggling with form this season, it is all to play for this match. It'll be a tough ask to outdo Bayern a second time around, as the first encounter was an especially tenuous affair. Even beleaguered we can well expect Stern des Südens to turn it around, and there should be goals abound to boot.

Real Sociedad vs PSG (Tuesday 20:00 UTC) [0:2]

Erreala welcomes Les Parisiens to the Reale Arena, San Sebastien almost a month on from an entertaining first leg at the Parc des Princes. The Ligue 1 champions emerged after 90 minutes triumphant by two goals to nil in the opening encounter, though it is by no means a done deal. On the weekend past the hosts suffered a bitter blow to their European qualification ambitions by being outdone by a resurgent Sevilla 3-2, while PSG snagged a point away in Monaco with the game ending a dry 0-0.

Real Sociedad couldn't break the opposition's defences in Paris during the first leg, though they were by no means short of chances, especially in the 1st half. Though of all their nine opportunities on goal only, none were on target and ultimately the game leaned towards the hosts who dominated with 63% possession. Ever prevalent, Kylian Mbappe finally broke the deadlock for Les Rouges-et-Bleus in the 58th minute, moving his tally in the competition to four out of seven games. Summer arrival Bradley Barcola, put to bed the game in the 70th when he shimmied past the defence and finished a stylish solo effort through Alex Remiro's legs to slot the ball home. The French U21 international is showing why the capital club shelled out £38m to Olympique Lyon last summer. Total - Match Over 2.5 at 2.03.

Since following up their first-leg loss to the French outfit they did enjoy a 2-1 triumph over Mallorca, however, Alguacil's men have been beaten in three consecutive matches since. Including a crushing Copa del Rey penalty-shootout loss to Los Piratas in the semi-finals and they'll have to rally hard if they have any chance to win and progress onto the quarterfinals. Morale will be especially low in the txuri-urdin dressing room, as faltering titans Sevilla bested them in Andalusia, meaning that the outfit has just one victory to boast from their last nine games in all tournaments, and more alarmingly their winless streak at home stands extends to seven matches since they coincidentally beat Los Hispalenses 2-1 in the La Liga last November. Real Sociedad to Score? 1st Half - Yes at 2.21.

PSG are now on track to banish the curse which has haunted them for many Champions League tournaments and finally proceed past the last 16 and garner its inaugural top-level European honour. The French champions head to España with a prolific 20-match unbeaten run to defend, even with two goalless draws against their most recent opponents in Ligue 1, Rennes and Monaco, only a minor footnote on the road to their league glory. The talk of both France and Spain lately is French international striker, Kylian Mbappé, who has once again dominated domestic proceedings with a resounding 21 goals in the league alone. The anticipated move to Los Blancos will likely finally occur this summer when his contract runs out, and opposition clubs will be aghast when they have to face him alongside the already potent attacking strike force of Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham. Correct Score 1:2 at 11.06.

A tough match beckons for Real Sociedad here, as they will start on the back foot. However, with the home crowd behind them and knowing that Les Parisiens are without a single clean sheet from their 12 Champions League encounters away to Spanish teams, perhaps they can undo the damage and provide an upset.
